API security
Keep your APIs open for business and closed to abuse.
Your APIs carry your most valuable data and power your apps, partners, and integrations. We test, design, and harden them so that only the right callers can reach the right data, at a rate your platform can handle.

The hidden front door
Your API is often easier to attack than your website.
A web page hides most of what happens behind it. An API does the opposite: it exposes clear, predictable endpoints that return structured data. Attackers love that. Change one ID in a request and see someone else's invoice. Send a few extra fields and become an administrator. Script thousands of login attempts a minute. These are everyday API flaws, and traditional firewalls rarely catch them.
We approach API security from both sides. Our testers probe your endpoints under agreed rules of engagement to find what can be abused, and our developers, who build APIs every day, help fix the design: consistent authorisation checks, careful input handling, sensible rate limits, and proper monitoring. The result is an API that is safer by design, not just patched after a test.
What we deliver
Protection across the whole API lifecycle.
From design review to production monitoring, we cover the controls that keep APIs secure.
01 API discovery and inventory +
- API inventory
- Shadow APIs
- Version sprawl
- OpenAPI
We find every API you expose, including old versions and undocumented endpoints, and build an accurate inventory.
02 API security testing +
- OWASP API Top 10
- REST
- GraphQL
- gRPC
- Business logic
Hands-on testing of REST, GraphQL, and gRPC APIs against the OWASP API Security Top 10 and your own business rules.
03 Authentication design +
- OAuth 2.0
- OpenID Connect
- JWT
- API keys
- mTLS
Robust token handling with OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, short-lived credentials, and secure key management for partners.
04 Authorisation controls +
- BOLA
- BFLA
- RBAC
- ABAC
- Policy engines
Object-level and function-level checks applied consistently, so users only ever see and change what belongs to them.
05 Rate limiting and abuse prevention +
- Rate limiting
- Quotas
- Bot protection
- Credential stuffing
Quotas, throttling, and bot protection that stop credential stuffing, scraping, and resource exhaustion without blocking real users.
06 API gateway and WAF configuration +
- API gateway
- WAF
- Schema validation
- TLS
Gateways and web application firewalls set up to enforce authentication, schemas, and limits at the edge.
07 Secure development and CI checks +
- Spec linting
- DAST
- Contract tests
- CI/CD
Secure coding guidance, spec linting, and automated API tests in your pipeline so new endpoints are checked before release.
08 Logging and monitoring +
- Audit logs
- Anomaly detection
- Alerting
- Dashboards
Structured API logs, anomaly alerts, and dashboards that reveal abuse patterns and data exfiltration attempts early.
What you gain
APIs your customers and partners can rely on.
-
Data stays private
Consistent authorisation stops users reaching records that are not theirs.
-
Stable under pressure
Rate limits protect performance from scrapers, bots, and runaway clients.
-
Safer integrations
Partners connect through well-defined, properly secured access.
-
Faster secure releases
Automated checks catch issues before new endpoints go live.
-
Early warning
Monitoring shows abuse patterns before they become breaches.
-

How we work
From inventory to ongoing protection.
-
01
Discover and scope
We inventory your APIs, review specifications, and agree test scope and rules of engagement in writing.
-
02
Test and review
We test endpoints hands-on and review authentication, authorisation, and gateway design.
-
03
Fix and harden
We deliver prioritised fixes and can implement them, from code changes to gateway policies.
-
04
Automate and monitor
We add API checks to CI/CD and set up logging and alerts for production.

Book a call →Why do APIs need separate security testing? + −
Many API flaws, such as broken object-level authorisation or mass assignment, are invisible through a normal user interface. Testing the API directly, with knowledge of its specification and roles, is the only reliable way to find them.
What is the OWASP API Security Top 10? + −
It is a widely used list of the most common and serious API risks, including broken authorisation, broken authentication, unrestricted resource consumption, and unsafe use of third-party APIs. We use it as a baseline and add tests specific to your business logic.
Does an API gateway make our APIs secure? + −
A gateway helps a great deal with authentication, rate limiting, and schema validation at the edge. But it cannot know whether user A should see record B; that check must live in your application. We secure both layers.
Can you test APIs without documentation? + −
Yes, though it takes longer. We can map endpoints from your apps and traffic. An OpenAPI specification or Postman collection, plus test accounts for each role, makes testing faster and more thorough.
How long does an API security engagement take? + −
Testing a single API with a moderate number of endpoints typically takes one to two weeks including reporting. Broader programmes that include gateway design, pipeline checks, and monitoring usually run four to eight weeks.
Will testing affect our production API? + −
We agree environments, rate limits, and testing windows in the rules of engagement before starting. Most clients provide a staging environment; where production testing is needed, we use test accounts and avoid destructive actions.
